Job advertisement parental leave replacement as ship technician (50-100%) (m/f/d)

As an NGO, we work against the deaths in the Mediterranean and to this end observation operations with our motor sailer “Nadir.” We also conduct educational work on land to raise awareness of the situation of refugees in the Mediterranean. During our operations, we document human rights violations and provide first aid in emergencies. In 2024, we were able to assist around 2,500 people in this way.

For the technical maintenance of our motor sailer “Nadir” we are looking for a parental leave replacement as a ship technician (m/f/d) from September 1, 2025 part-time or full-time (50-100%). We are flexible with regard to the duration of the position: either on site for a limited period of one winter until March 2026 or for a limited period of 1.5 years until spring 2027 with the prospect of extension and technical support during the assignments from the home office.

  • Docking season in Gozo Marina from mid-November to the beginning of March
    • Independent repair work as far as possible
    • Supervising volunteers during maintenance work
  • Selection and support of companies for their work on the ship
  • List defects during operations
  • Instruction of the volunteer crews in the on-board technology and its maintenance based on the maintenance plans
  • Creation and maintenance of technical instructions, revision of maintenance plans, coordination of external, independent surveys
  • Improvements to the ship
    • Self-identification of potential nautical and operational improvements to the vessel
    • Conduct retrospectives with crews regarding experiences and suggestions for improvement

What you should bring with you:

  • Practical and technical experience and diligence
  • Ideally vocational training as a boat builder, marine electrician or marine mechanic, but any other practical, technical training/study is possible
  • Experience in coordinating and working in volunteer teams (also in English)
  • Experience in managing construction sites, ideally shipyards, in close cooperation with volunteers, but also with companies
  • Perseverance, skill, commitment, imagination

What you can look forward to:

  • a high degree of personal responsibility, close cooperation with motivated volunteers
  • A meaningful task and a broad field for implementing creative ideas
  • The opportunity to try out new ways and live out your creativity
  • The working hours are free, but due to the cooperation with many voluntary association members, there are always activities outside the usual office working hours
